The companies do a range of work, including manufacturing nucleic acid-based medicines, automating or digitalizing manufacturing efforts, or developing methods around intracellular drug delivery for vaccines. The funds come from Innovate UK , a public entity supporting technology and science businesses.

This includes contract manufacturer Rentschler Biopharma , which plans to implement analytical technologies to boost efficiency in the production of gene therapies. Rentschler recently built a cell and gene manufacturing site in Stevenage .

Another investment is going to VaxEquity , a biotech spinoff from Imperial College London that inked a deal with AstraZeneca in 2021, to produce RNA-based vaccines and therapeutics.

Innovate UK did not disclose the investment amount for each company.

The government has been aggressively investing in its manufacturing sector this year as part of Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt’s plan to inject £650 million, which is about $827.9 million, into the UK’s life sciences sector. Around £38 million, or $48.4 million, has gone into biomanufacturing efforts, with Innovate UK also contributing.

The UK government in March awarded millions of pounds to UK-based DNA manufacturer Touchlight, Ipsen and contract manufacturer Pharmaron for various improvements and job-boosting initiatives.
