Research PhD Studentship
PhD Studentship 1 : Investigating the influence of the gut microbiome on host
metabolism
Closing Date for Applications: 31 st August 2023
School & Centre: School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and School of Microbiology and APC Microbiome
Ireland
College: College of Science, Engineering and Food Science
Job Type: Research PhD Studentship
Unique ID: SFI Microbe Restore PhD Studentship -metabolism
PhD Studentship (4 years Duration).
The gut microbiome is widely acknowledged as a significant contributor to various chronic diseases, with diet playing a crucial role in influencing it. It is intricately connected to host metabolism and communication within the body. Despite this recognition, there is still much to learn about the complex interactions between hosts and microbes.
An exciting opportunity for a PhD candidate has arisen to be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary research program that delves into the impact of diet and microbial changes on host metabolism. The project will encompass strain specific and in vitro metabolism studies with the characterization of gut microbial and
metabolomic profiles through human intervention studies and analyses. To gain a deeper understanding,
computational modelling approaches will be employed to explore the potential and actual effects of the human gut microbiome on host metabolism. This project is situated at the crossroads of human metabolism, microbial and determining health, presenting a chance to acquire critical new data. These findings will play a crucial role
in shaping a broader program aimed at utilizing nutritional and microbiome-based strategies to prevent chronic diseases.
To Apply:
Interested candidates should submit:
• (i) a covering letter detailing their interest and reasons for applying for this position
• (ii) a CV (including the name and contact details of 2 referees). Also, if appropriate, please include details of
any publications and conference presentations
• (iii) a summary of any relevant research experience to date
Please submit the above documents to Victoria McMahon, vmcmahon@ucc.ie, on or before the closing date of 31 st August 2023. Please reference ‘PhD Studentship – Microbe Restore – Metabolism’ on the subject line of your application.

PhD Studentship (4 years Duration).
The gut microbiome is widely acknowledged as a significant contributor to various chronic diseases and in maintaining host health. It is intricately connected to host immunology and communication within the body.
Despite this recognition, there is still much to learn about the complex interactions between hosts and microbes. An exciting opportunity for a PhD candidate has arisen to be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary research program that delves into the impact of specific missing microbes in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
The project will encompass strain specific and in vitro and in vivo metabolism studies with the characterization of gut microbial and metabolomic profiles through murine intervention studies and analyses. The student with interact, as part of a wider team to contribute to a deeper understanding of IBD. Based on host immune responses and on host metabolism. This project interfaces microbial benefits in health and disease presenting a
chance to acquire critical new data, based on sound hypothesis from our prior art. These findings will play a crucial role in shaping a broader program aimed at utilizing microbiome-based strategies to treat chronic gut disease.
