Job Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
This internship will be performing synthesis in an exciting arena with a strong interaction with an expert chemist. Specifically, the intern will assist in the synthesis of fluorescent probe compounds to support Target Engagement technologies. Under supervision, this intern will perform laboratory experiments, tasks, and associated paperwork as assigned. May present experimental results to individuals and groups. Generally, assist in the operations and maintenance of the laboratory.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Working towards BS degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry
We would expect that the intern has been exposed to at least two semesters of organic chemistry in a classroom setting, with some concomitant experience at the bench doing synthesis. An extensive level of bench work is not imperative. Some exposure to analytical chemistry a plus!
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine laboratory tasks assigned by supervisor using basic organic chemistry research techniques.
- Perform and monitor chemical reactions
- Process and purify reaction products using standard laboratory techniques.
- Characterize reaction products using standard analytical tools, such as NMR Spectroscopy, IR, Spectrometry, and Mass Spectrometry
- Responsible for accurate scientific research documentation of test procedures and results, and explanation of process to supervisor.
- Maintain laboratory area according to established company/ department practices.
- Perform all laboratory assignments in accordance with established safety procedures in assigned laboratory or work area.
- Maintain adequate laboratory supplies to ensure laboratory assignments are accomplished efficiently.
- Understand and comply with all elements of the PBI quality system outlined for this position
- All employees must complete assigned duties in a safe manner, thoroughly familiarizing themselves with safety concerns, such as reading safety data sheets, wearing necessary protective clothing, including safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves, respirators, etc. All employees are required to attend regularly scheduled safety meetings. Responsible for monitoring safety practices of assigned area
OCCASIONAL DUTIES:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to move about and walk frequently throughout the laboratory area.
- Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing 25 pounds or more occasionally throughout the shift.
- Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, push and pull objects.
- Must be able to read and understand labels, procedures, SDS’s, and distinguish colors.
- Must have good hand, arm and finger dexterity.
- Requires corrected vision for near (within 20 cm) and far (greater than 3 m) activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The primary work areas are the laboratories. In some areas there is the possibility of minimal exposure to chemical vapors that are used in the production and analysis of products. Exposure will be below OSHA permissible exposure levels. Appropriate personal protection equipment will be provided per company policy including gloves, safety glasses, lab coat, respirator, etc.
