Postdoctoral fellow in computational RNA biology and metagenomics

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
Postdoctoral fellow in computational RNA The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has around 40 research groups and our keywords are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

Your role

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral fellow with a passion for developing experimental methods to join our team. In this role, you will be involved in a ground-breaking project that aims to advance the study of protein-RNA interactions through the integration of proteomics and genomics. This with the support of expertise from the Piazza and Pelechano laboratories. With an established proof-of-concept, you will work on refining and optimizing the method to achieve broad applicability and high reproducibility. You will have the opportunity to apply this new method to explore pressing biomedical questions, such as elucidating the key functions of proteins that control RNA binding specificity, and then exploit this knowledge to advance human tumor treatments and immunotherapies.

You will work on an exciting multidisciplinary project that integrates multiomics methods aimed at understanding the crosstalk between RNAs at the bulk and single-cell level. You will have access to state-of-the-art instrumentation including mass spectrometers for single-cell proteomics analysis and be involved in international interdisciplinary collaborations.

The selected candidate is expected to contribute their own ideas and take a strong lead in the experimental design and data interpretation. The candidate will conduct original research in genomics and/or proteomics and acquire the necessary experimental and computational skills required to complete the project. The candidate will be responsible for the experimental design, implement analytical pipelines and integrate different types of genomic data to answer biologically relevant questions.

The selected candidate will collaborate with other team members and is expected to communicate the scientific results by writing scientific articles and participating in scientific meetings. The ideal candidate is also expected to participate in the general tasks of the team and to communicate effectively with researchers from different backgrounds in an interdisciplinary and international environment.

The position is based in Stockholm (Sweden), but you will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with the Piazza laboratory located at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) in Berlin (Germany). The working language is English.

If you are a dedicated researcher with a desire to drive innovation in the field, we encourage you to apply for this exciting position.

Who are you?

  • To be employed as a postdoctoral fellow, a completed doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time the employment decision is made. It is advantageous if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
  • Applicants for this position should have a PhD in bioinformatics, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology or related fields.
  • The successful candidate should have experience in interpreting biological data and experimentally testing their hypothesis. In addition, previous experience with computational analyzes of metagenomics or metatranscriptomics is essential. Experience in ribosome dynamics, RNA biology and gene expression will be considered.
  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary technology development, innovation and creative thinking is essential. Preferred experience also includes familiarity with bioinformatics, NGS data analysis, bioinformatics package development, Python and R scripting languages. Previous experience with bacteria-drug interaction, antimicrobial resistance or microbial is meritorious.

Requirements for the position :

  • PhD in RNA/protein biochemistry, systems biology, molecular biology or equivalent
A strong interest in proteomics and/or genomics and quantitative biology
  • At least one of the following backgrounds:
  • For proteomics : general knowledge of quantitative proteomics data collection and data analysis
  • For genomics : knowledge of NGS library generation, single-cell methods (eg RNA-Seq, ATAC…) and NGS data analysis
  • Curiosity and motivation to learn the complementary omics approach (eg: a candidate with a PhD in genomics should be keen to use proteomics strategies or vice versa)
Ability to work independently and in a team, excellent communication skills
  • A solid experimental or calculation-based background
  • A strong publication record as lead author
  • Excellent communication skills in English

Meritorious for the position :

Programming knowledge in Python or R is a plus
Previous experience of working with human cancer cell lines and stem cells is advantageous
