Lab Coordinator Jobs. The Biology Department is seeking a course coordinator for Biology 200. The purpose of this position is to manage and coordinate all aspects of instruction for Biology 200 to ensure the uniform excellence of undergraduate learning in lectures and labs. Biology 200 is the second in a series of three rigorous introductory courses required for a major in Biology and other health science educational programs. This course covers cell biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and development. The person in this position works under the direction of the lecturer to coordinate activities and administrate the course for students. The coordinator also manages and trains a team of teaching assistants each term. No lecturing is involved. The course is offered autumn, winter and spring quarters to 330-770 students each quarter. This is a full-time, 10-month, academic year job (August 16 to June 15), with the expectation of additional work for Summer Quarter (June 16 to August 15) in many, if not all years.

POSITION COMPLEXITIES AND IMPACT:
- Faculty (and graduate student Teaching Assistants) change each quarter. Many have not taught before and depend on the support and guidance of the lab coordinator to learn how to deal successfully with a large introductory course. Considerable TA training may be required.
- The course must be taught each quarter with student populations of more than 350 in a single quarter. Ensuring uniformity of the lab experience and achieving lab learning goals with differentially prepared students and rotating faculty and TAs is a strong challenge for this position.
- University deadlines require that planning for the coming quarter occurs up to three quarters in advance. The lab coordinator must deal with 2 different sets of faculty and TAs and be able to focus on future and current needs simultaneously. Due to the interactive nature of this position with faculty and TA’s and students, this position is expected to be on campus 5 days per week.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support and organize logistics for Bio200 lectures (25%)
- Develop, plan, test, & coordinate laboratory exercises; revise and produce quarterly lab manual; attend lectures; include faculty contributions into the process when feasible (15%)
- Organize, set up, break down & oversee 200 laboratories; be available during lab sessions as necessary to provide support & backup to TAs; plan & coordinate equipment sharing with other courses (15%)
- Handle all course logistics not the purview of faculty including grade records, scheduling problems, academic misconduct administration, etc. (10%)
- Prepare and supervise TAs; present content & technical aspects of each exercise in weekly TA meetings and, with lecturing faculty, discuss teaching issues with TAs; oversee and participate in course grading (15%)
- Coordinate training and preparation of TAs for lab sections each quarter (5%)
- Locate, prepare and order lab materials and equipment; be familiar with and follow UW EH&S lab safety guidelines other relevant regulations, policies, and procedures (5%)
- Manage course webpages and coordinate updates with faculty; configure online exercises as needed; arrange for lecture video-recording; interact with departmental computing staff when necessary (5%)
- Manage course fee budget for each course and ensure costs do not exceed revenues (5%)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- MS in cell biology, genetics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Two years’ experience teaching introductory college-level biology
