Job Description
The Role:
Moderna is seeking talented interns to join the Bioinformatics Software Engineering team. This is a great opportunity to work with experienced Senior Software Engineers advancing Moderna’s mRNA therapeutics platform. This internship will run from June 3rd-August 16th. After the summer internship, there may be an opportunity for you to continue working at Moderna on a part-time basis (10 to 20 hours per week).
- Collaborate with scientists, researchers, and senior engineers to understand and define requirements of bioinformatics software.
- Meet at least weekly with your mentor for guidance and collaboration.
- Present at least once to the Bioinformatics team.
- Debug issues, fix bugs, and improve the performance of existing software tools used by bioinformatics pipelines.
- Write automated tests to ensure the quality and reliability of the software.
Basic Qualifications (all roles):
- Degree in Computer Science; Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related field.
- Knowledge of one or more programming languages such as Python, C++, Java, or R
- Familiarity with Docker
- Comfortable working in Unix environment.
- Familiarity with software development methodologies and practices, including version control, testing, and code review.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Must be curious, eager, open to learning, and independent.
- Authorized to work in the U.S
- Minimum GPA of 3.4
Preferred Technical Skills:
- Previous experience working in cloud environment such as AWS.
- Knowledge of workflow languages like NextFlow, WDL or CWL.
- Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools.
- Experience with bioinformatic pipelines for sequencing data analysis.
- Previous co-op or intern experience
- Course work in data structures, algorithms, or software design
