THE POSITION

2024 Summer Intern – Biological Chemistry

Department Summary

The Biological Chemistry Department is seeking a highly motivated and talented summer intern to join us and broaden our display technology.  The focus will be on developing whole cell panning with a phage displayed scFv library. This is a hands-on laboratory position. The successful candidate will implement and apply molecular biology, and biochemistry to develop novel methods for identifying antibodies and characterization of their biochemical properties.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA, on-site

Key Responsibilities

• Perform the Whole Cell Panning (WCP) with phage displayed scFv library
• Express scFv hits in E coli, purify them
• Application of biochemical/biophysical techniques
• Presentation and discussion of data in team meetings
• Maintaining accurate laboratory documentation

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
• Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
• Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
• Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

• Must be pursuing a Master’s Degree (enrolled student)
• Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)
• Degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or related fields

Required majors: Biochemistry, Biology or related

Required skills:

• Basic biochemistry and molecular biology lab skills
• Basic understanding of biochemical binding assays such as Biacore (surface plasmon resonance) and ELISA
• At least two (2) years of lab experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience with DNA plasmid manipulation, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
• Experience in protein expression/purification
• Experience with phage display and FACS are a plus
• Experience with antibody/protein structure software (Pymol) is a plus
• Basic understanding of antibody structure, discovering and developing antibodies

Relocation benefits are not available for this job position

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $35.00 – $50.00 per hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
