Job Description:Â
- We are looking for a motivated biological scientist to join our team of clinician-scientists, coordinators, and staff in the Department of Emergency Medicine Division of Research at UF Health Jacksonville. Our Emergency Department cares for critically ill and injured patients from diverse backgrounds including a large underserved population. Our translational research laboratory is central to advancing our knowledge and the science of care for our patients. This biological scientist position will play a pivotal role in establishing and expanding the capabilities of our research laboratory. Work in our lab is currently funded by NIH (R01, K23, R33), UF Office of Research and CTSI, and several private funding sources.
- The biological scientist will work on assigned Emergency Medicine research projects with a specific focus on 1) sepsis and critical care translational studies in the area of lipid metabolism and dysregulation including lipidomics and genomics, 2) biologic processes (including genomics) contributing to disparities in pain outcomes, and 3) precision medicine for pediatric asthma.
- University of Florida 45% – Perform biochemical and analytical assays to measure lipid and lipoprotein function. Prior experience in biochemical assay development and in lipid, lipoprotein or cholesterol metabolism is a strength. Specific skills should include knowledge and experience in:
- ELISA
- Gene Expression
- Western Blotting
- Lipid Oxidation
- Cholesterol Efflux Assay (a plus)
- Assays of proinflammatory oxidized lipids and monocyte-dependent endothelial cell activation (a plus)
- University of Florida 25% – Perform initial processing and storage of biospecimens from acute care and emergency medicine research studies including centrifuging samples, pipetting, labelling and storing. Maintaining the lab space database (lab roster, chemical inventory, annual inspection).
- 10% – Supervise biobanking of samples from the sepsis biobank as well as other biobank specimens. Work with off-site laboratories at UF Gainesville and other universities to transport specimens for specialized testing. Manages the EM Research Laboratory LIMS system for sample storage and analysis.
- 5% – Assist in the training of students and other research personnel.
- 5% – Preparation of reports and manuscripts and the communication on the progress of projects with investigators.
- 5% – Assist with daily operations and maintenance of the instruments.
- 5% – Other duties as assigned, incidental to the work described herein.
- University of Florida jobs Additional duties may be assigned based on the needs of the Department of Emergency Medicine Division of Research including analysis of clinical samples consisting of blood, buccal swabs, saliva samples, and urine specimens. Competitive candidates should be willing to work flexible hours and work well as a team with EM research faculty, leadership, and research coordinators.
EXPECTED SALARY: University of Florida
$33,800 – $50,000 annually depending on education and experience.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of MS in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field. Experience in lipid metabolism and oxidation is preferred.
